"He who digs and plows wants to alter nature, not
plunder it. To plant means to give, not to take. But
thereby one becomes plantlike himself - that is, a farmer.
One takes root in the ground that one cultivates." Oswald
Spengler
Call him what you will, Jude
Wanniski was one of the few pundits, political soothsayers,
old-time newspapermen, who "got" China. He was a rare
voice of reason in the din of shrill anti-Chinese rhetoric
that makes up much of political and economic discourse
in America today. Whether the topic was the Tiananmen
Square "massacre" or Chinese monetary policy, Jude always
stood up for the truth of the matter regardless of the
accepted view, and presented his case in facts that
withstand debate.
His departure is a great loss for this website, for
there are few well-known and respected figures that
we can turn to for confirmation and validation of our
views of China. But his example remains an inspiration
to carry on the task of showing the world how to question
and think about what's happening around us versus simply
believing what we are told.
In his memory, following are a few links we have included
over the past seven years to Jude's writings on China
that remain as fresh and important as they were the
day they appeared:
1999 "Silence
at the Times"
2000 "Democracy
in China"
2001 "Moral
equivalence or Golden Rule"
2005 "Remember
Tiananmen Square!"
2005 "Stupid
Bipartisanship"
