| Dusty
street in a new district outside Guangzhou (Canton) |
A scene typical of suburban Guangzhou and not unlike similar
neighborhoods ringing the large cities of southern Europe
(i.e., Madrid, Barcelona, Marseilles, Rome, Athens). Guangzhou
is the capital of Guangdong province, an economic powerhouse
with a high standard of living. Roughly half of all homes
in Guangzhou have a personal computer. Cell phones, as in
Shanghai, are ubiquitous. Guangdong province is approximately
the size of France with a population around 66 million people.
